Arrived: East Grinstead

Karen picked us up this morning at Gatwick after a long wait to get through customs. She and her husband Ian took us on a little walking tour of this intriguing town in West Sussex. It boasts one of the most complete High Streets from the middle ages. Some of the buildings are more than 500 years old. Everything new even on the outskirts have to match the style.

Here are some photos taken on a cloudy afternoon.

The ones below are of a 400-year-old alms house built by a nobleman to house older people without means. Amazingly it still has this function, albeit with larger renovated spaces. It has a fascinating history, recounted to us in great detail by the volunteer holding forth in the next photo.  The building is remarkably unchanged, built of lovely mellow sandstone.

Here we are posing by a Victorian water fountain, also of the local sandstone. We ended up having dinner in the former stables of a 500 year old building, now an Indian restaurant. It poured rain tonight, no doubt precipitated (pun not intended) by my decision to leave my hooded raincoat at home. It's meant to clear up tomorrow though.

  1. Hey Joanna & Harry Have a wonderful trip! I look forward to following along. Will be interested to see where you go in Soain & P. You always put together a great trip! I am regretting not taking the time to figure out how to set up my blog on WordPress as I am having real problems uploading my photos on Travellerspoint. Travel safe!

  3. You'll want to get rid of any comments by this "Greg Dunne". It's a spammer who's been making the rounds copying and pasting the same comment, and he's spamming a law firm of all things.
