Flowering Maple

The other day I took a walk in the gardens at Government House with my friend Heather.  She had invited me specifically to see this astounding flower.  Its Latin name is Abutilon, commonly known as the flowering maple.  It's a shrub, not a tree, and it has the most stunningly beautiful flowers.

Isn't is lovely with its bell-like shape and the varied colours? You can see the maple-like leaves in the photo below.

These photos show two varieties.  I can't decide which I like best.  Which do you prefer?

  1. I love both of them. We used to grow them in the 70's in the greenhouse I used to work in, when they were considered house plants! Very pretty!

  2. Those are stunning! I've never seen either one before. I think I like the bell-shape best. But it's pretty ahrd to declare a winner.

I have never seen this plant, tree, bush ? and the flowers are quite specular.
I like them both and was going to say the longer one till I looked again at the rounder bell shaped one and decided I liked that one better.... but who knows tomorrow ?

    cheers, parsnip
