Mystery fruit

Does anyone know what this mystery fruit is?  It's about two inches long and is liked by birds.  We've seen this opened and there are seeds inside.  Here it is in a less ripe form.  It's really beautiful but I have not the slightest idea what plant it's from.

  1. I don't know what it is, but it's beautiful

  2. For some reason it reminds me of a kite caught in a tree. I've never seen that so I guess it's not something that travels well. Is it edible?

I really appreciate your comments.
