FIghting with fleas

Nobody seems to be bothered by these things except me.  Harry and Doris don't get any bites.  Even the dogs aren't scratching, but my feet and legs are covered with bites.  I think they are from las pulgas, otherwise known as fleas.  Of course the dogs are on flea preventive medication--but I'm not!  And something about my skin seems to attract biting insects when nobody else is affected.

This morning I went to the pharmacia to get some anti-itch medication and it helps a bit.  But of course we have to treat the cause.  I think that it's the car.  It seems whenever I get in the car I get fleabites.  My theory is that the dogs picked up a flea or two on the trip down and they've just multiplied.

So this afternoon after we put Doris on the plane I went to the veterinarian to pick up some flea spray.  The van has been sprayed within an inch of its life.  I don't dare even open the doors until at least tomorrow afternoon.  And I'm crossing my fingers that this will do the trick.  If not, we will be treating the house itself, but I hope that won't be necessary.

No photos of fleas to post so I'll just give you a glimpse of a view of the Olas Altas and the lovely sunset last night.  We had a great going away dinner and a drink at the top of the Posada Freeman with a view of the city as a send-off for Doris.

  1. OH ! Fleas, no please. Have you tried mosquito repellant? I can bring down Avon's famous product, loved by off-shore sailors in tropical climes. It's a bath oil made by Avon, called 'Skin So Soft". Jan Dockerill, our peripatetic sailor friend, swears by it. Let me know. I will probably bring it anyway.

  2. It's possible they're in the sand. My daughter got bitten horribly on the beach in Puerto Vallarta. I think your visitor should bring something with DEET, too. Just in case the skin so soft doesn't work.

  3. Ugh! Fleas. I wonder why some people are tastier than others? If there's a biting insect anywhere it finds me. May your drastic remedies all be effective.

  4. Rudee, that's an interesting idea--that they come from the beach. And it could be the case. I'll ask my sister to bring some DEET repellent too.

  5. Ches gets sand flea bites, and we can see them hopping on parts of the beach where the sand is drying out - not wet, not dry. They naturally go for the ankles. I only get a few bites.

  8. Thanks Rudee, This was most informative. I think I'll be wearing insect repellent to the beach from now on.

  9. Plus--Rudee's theory would explain why my dogs aren't affected.

  10. joanna i remember fleas from my childhood when we had a beautiful border collie who we got as a puppy from a wlesh farm. he had fleas and they got into the house and my legs were nipped up to the knees. my wife can connect to being vistimized by biting insects as she gets every mosquito in the neighbourhood homing in on her while the rest of us go bite-free!!! steven
