Tortilla soup and other delights

My friend Linette who has been visiting with us for the past week was on a mission.  Well several missions actually.  One of them was to sample as many bowls of tortilla soup as she could and decide which one was the best.

If you aren't familiar with this soup I highly recommend it.  It is a standard on the menu in just about every restaurant in town, and in every place it's different.  Basically it's a chicken broth with the addition of some spices, sliced avocado and deep fried tortillas. Sometimes the broth is red and tomato-y and sometimes it's creamy.  Sometimes there are other additions as well--but it's always delicious.  In the photo above she's swooning over a version from Hacienda las Moras, which in fact she declared the winner.

Linette's other missions (aside from the de rigeur suntan) included taking photos of animals...

and the elegant buildings in old town....
As well as meeting some of the dogs at the Mazatlan animal shelter.  Here she is with two of them, a lovely border collie mix on the right and the golden-eyed pup in the harness.  I'll be introducing you to some of the other denizens of the shelter soon.

Linette and Mark headed back to Victoria yesterday...and just in time.  It's been raining ever since they left.

Stephanie, next time you're in a Mexican restaurant see if you can give it a try.

Jeanette, tortilla soup made with sweet potatoes sounds intriguing. I'll have to search that out. Thanks for your comment.
