Already we like Trieste

I had heard good things about Trieste but there's not a lot of information about it.  Rick Steves doesn't even mention it in his book on Italy.  But I read that The Lonely Planet calls it the most underrated destination in Europe.

So far I'd have to agree.  It's very reasonable (taxi from the train station less than 5 Euros, hotel 89 Euros a night for a suite with a kitchen). This is the view out our window on the 9th floor.

And here's a look at the room. Two big windows in the living room/bedroom and another one in the kitchen. Here's the bedroom, an alcove set off with pillars and drapes.  It's actually a small apartment, and a perfect place to settle in to explore this city of 230,000 that's been here since Roman times.

We took a short walk out to the Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia, a dramatic space with neoclassical buildings on three sides and the ocean on the the fourth. In the buildings are upscale clothing and design shops plus elegant cafes with outdoor seating and very reasonable prices.

Harry's smiling because we were able to get excellent beer and wine, plus a strudel and a piece of cake for 12 Euros with the addition of the tray of hors d'oeuvres thrown in.

We found some pedestrian side streets with food stores and bought a few things to stock our kitchen. We're looking forward to doing a little bit of cooking while we're here.

Walking back through the piazza I noticed this angel at the very top of the large statue in the middle.  I've never seen a sculpture showing the the angle flying horizontally before.  I love the way her feet are angled back and her arms are floating out to the side.  The pigeons seem to like her too.
