Water colour beginning

I'm finally beginning to work on the water colour paintings of the Wark Street Commons.  It's hard to find the time with all the renovations we're doing but I've started a painting of a squash flower.

It's always hard for me to decide how far to take a painting.  I kind of like this as it is but I could go a lot farther with it.  I could make it much more detailed like this one that I completed last year in Mazatlan.

I guess it's a toss-up between realistic (and possibly stiff) or loose and possibly unfinished.  Any comments?

  1. I like both versions, but I think my favorite is the bottom one, so very realistic! Do you sell your paintings?

  2. Oh, I like the less detailed squash flower painting. I like the soft colors and the spaces for my imagination to fill in. The flower itself has beautiful shadings.

I like the new header, too!

  3. Alone again, I have sold some art works in the past but not these more realistic water colours. I'm still learning the technique. I'm glad you like the painting.

Stephanie, thanks for the comment about allowing the imagination to work. I may take the squash flower a bit further, but hopefully not too much.

  4. The first hints of a feeling - it is more open to the viewer's unique interpretation, I think. That said, bravo for your realism, too!

  5. I like both paintings but I rather like the first one better.
I could see you going in and adding some small detail to part of the flower but mostly leaving it very light and free as you have.
    That is only my idea...
I think watercolors are hard, you can't take anything back and you can often go one brush stroke to far !

I really enjoy when you post your watercolors. Wonderful.

    cheers, parsnip
