Sunday morning at the Juarez market
The Juarez Market operates every Sunday in the six block area around the church in this neighbourhood of Mazatlan. We headed down there with Peggy (my painting friend) early yesterday morning to see what was for sale. In a word: everything. This is an area with lots of fruit and vegetable stands that operate every day but on Sunday streets area closed off and vendors and just regular folk set up tables. It’s a huge flea market and it was a fascinating experience.
It was a crowded scene; everybody was there, from the nuns to moms with babies, to teenagers, to little girls with their fathers...
There were women selling shrimp, and fish...
curanderos selling herbal remedies....
and this young lady who was selling soothers for babies filled with coloured sugar syrup....
Here are just some of the things we saw for sale.
A plastic-wrapped Virgin Mary and some ceramic frogs...
colourful underwear....
tools and baseball bats
sparkly dresses and footwear to match,
a huge variety of posters from religious to sporty...
spices, kids clothes and used tires for your car...
and my favourite--the baby dolls (or nenucos).
There were refreshments....
and even entertainment from a one-man band...
We didn’t buy anything except hot doughnuts (yum) and fresh squeezed orange juice from this amazing machine that does it all while you watch.
By the time we'd covered all the aisles we were deep into sensory overload and ready to go home and have a nap. It's quite an exciting way to spend Sunday morning.

joanna that's such a rich glorious ride through the market and having jst walked eight kilometres home through the twenty below eastern woodlands wintertime i am deeply grateful for the warmth, the colour, and the great vibe off your blog!!!!!! steven
ReplyDeletewow--what a contrast Steven! A cold snowy walk sounds very refreshing compared to the Juarez market. Best wishes for a lovely 2010.
ReplyDeleteSteven is a hardy soul...
ReplyDeleteAre those people in the market crazy? Look how they're dressed as though it isn't actually frigid there. Don't they know it's winter?
So warm and lively. What a riot of color! That's my kind of shopping...look and look and come home exhausted but full and happy.
