Proof that it's an old house

This is one of the nails I took out of the laundry room trim in the house on Yukon Street the other day.  This is a handmade nail, created on a forge in a blacksmith's shop, made in a time before factories produced nails.  The house on Yukon Street was built in 1898 so it's well over 100 years old.  It's kind of hard to believe that at that time every nail that went into a building was hand made on a forge.   We do take these small things for granted (nails, razor blades, spoons...).  I wouldn't even begin to know how to create something as simple as this handmade nail.

  1. joanna it's extraordinary to think that everything at one time had to be handcrafted - almost on the spot - for a house to be built. cool find! steven

  2. It was a lot slower to build that house to keep the family out of the rain. Cool find, though, to remind us of those days.

  3. I like the way you notice things...and value things... These old nails are beautiful .. an so much care had to taken in their creation .. something we would never much think about in something as common as a nail...
